Angela Holmes ~ Sculpture & Ceramics
My Life
Following studies at Dartington College of Arts, near Totnes, and Rolle College of Education, Exmouth in the 1970s, I set out in search of a lifestyle that would unite my interests in art, people and nature. This lead to many years of working in Camphill Communities together with adults and teenagers with learning disabilities in England and South Africa. While the intensity of daily life didn't afford time to pursue individual ambitions, the inspiring environments, group dynamics and development of undiscovered potential have fuelled many ensuing activities.
In 1998, I opened a new chapter in life, hoping to develop my love of ceramics which had been sitting on the back-burner. Ironically I fell into an unexpected passion: that of carving stone, which I can best explain by a simple need to “knock against something” in a order to make a transition in work and identity.
I subsequently carved many abstract and tactile sculptures for homes and gardens, exhibiting widely in various West Country Sculpture Trails and Galleries. I was also active in liasing between SW sculptors and Sculpteurs Bretagne and participating in exchange exhibitions in Landivisiau and Totnes.
Recently, challenged by the weight and installation of large works, I have made a return journey into clay, enjoying its immediacy, diversity and manageable dimensions. It would take several life-times to exhaust the possibilities of clay and stone but I would like to share some works, past and present in this web-site.
